However, I thought I'd give you a quick update on where I've been and what I've been up to, just in case you don't know. And I thought I'd do that via the New Year's resolutions list I've been keeping for 2 years now. :P
- Lose 60lbs. (ideal goal: Lose 30lbs): Yeah... this goal? Not so much. I've been absolutely swamped this entire year. You'll see why soon enough.
- Win the lottery (ideal goal: Find a better paying job): Still in the same job, in the same place, though there are definitely prospects out there. However, I've sort of taken on a second job (you'll see, #4, keep reading).
- Write a program, sell it, retire (ideal goal: work in Python with etank, and write software of my own) Most (read: all) of the programming I've done over the last year has been for work. I wish I had more time to write code, but I just don't. :/
- Gain internet notoriety (ideal goal: Pick something, run with it): This is one of the two items I feel I've really made progress on. At the end of December, 2009, I started a YouTube series, just like I had planned (and, as it turns out, it was almost 3 weeks to the day after the last resolutions update!). It's called "This Week In Linux". I wanted to do something YouTube, since I was so inspired by some of the daily vloggers I watched, and Linux is sort of my thing, so when I saw the Linux News market on YouTube was relatively scarce, I jumped at the chance! The two channels I found when searching were QuickSurfInternet and JupiterBroadcasting. From what I could tell, the major focus of both of these channels were podcasting, with YouTube being a 2nd (or 3rd) priority. So I pulled together a list of Linux news sources, made a video (it took me days, honestly) and tried it out. Things went slowly at first, making videos regularly, a few people would watch, etc. and almost 6 months from the day I started, I was accepted into the YouTube Partner Program. This means I can put ads on my videos and actually get paid to do something I love! In the 10 months since I started making videos, I've accumulated approximately 9,000 subscribers and over 850,000 total video views. It's not gargantuan, it's not monumental, but it's a huge accomplishment for me.
- Be a good father / role model to my (then) unborn son (ideal goal: one day at a time, teach him): Just like last year, I think I've done pretty well on this one. I think there have only been a total of 2 or 3 nights I've been away from the little guy since he was born, and that was for Ohio LinuxFest. I've been there to teach him new words, show him new games, read to him, and take him to bed every night... and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
